Upcoming events and fundraisers

Upcoming events and fundraisers

CCHFH is always out in the community, organizing fun events and fundraisers.  We always need volunteers to help us; so if these sound fun, please get in contact with us!

On October 24 we had our Great Pumpkin Launch!!  That’s right, we had pumpkin cannons set up for everyone to come with their pumpkin and launch them high into the air for a satisfying *splat*!  The holidays can sometimes be stressful; what better stress relief than to launch an object out of a cannon?

The Great Pumpkin Launch of 2010 used a pumpkin cannon very similar to the one pictured here.

We had vendors selling fresh local produce, tons of food and music to boot.  A fantastic time was had by all.  A huge thanks to the sponsors of the event, Wissel Farms and Modern Woodman Fraternal Financial.  We are very grateful for everyone’s participation and generous donations!  Thank you!

The next event coming up is another habitat house dedication!  We’re wrapping up another house build in Canyon County and we’d love to have you come see what CCHFH is all about.  We have been working really hard to get this house ready for the cold Treasure Valley winter and we’re proud to have it done before Christmas.  Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, we’ve had lots of helping hands lending their expertise, strength and heart to build yet another home for a family in need.  We’ll be dedicating the house to the new owners on November 20.  More details will follow!

What’s hot? Introducing the CCHFH Blog!

The idea sprang from volunteers; excited about their experiences with Canyon County Habitat for Humanity (CCHFH), they wanted to tell the world. When you help to build a house for someone in need, it becomes a very personal experience. Building is also a hands-on, busy job. It is fun, and you can see tangible results in a single day. They hoped that by blogging about these experiences they could draw more people to CCHFH for a fun experience.

The blog was created as a Service Learning project by a team of students in Web 2.0, a graduate class in the English Department at Boise State University. Service learning is a hot new teaching technique that combines citizenship and learning. Students work on a project that benefits a non-profit community partner.

For information on service learning, go to http://servicelearning.boisestate.edu. BSU’s Service Learning Program invites non-profit organizations to an annual reception where they can learn about past projects and mingle with professors who are looking for new projects.

We hope the new blog gives volunteers a place to tell their stories, spreads enthusiasm for volunteering, and increases CCHFH’s visibility. Please tell us your questions, ideas, and suggestions. We look forward to your comments and are excited to see where this will lead us!
